Alternative Pain Relief
Natural pain remedies

Alternative pain relief: Natural remedies from M.D.s and other medical professionals. Effective therapies to make you sigh with relief.

I have nothing against traditional medicine. Surgery and drugs have saved millions of lives. However, in some cases, drugs may not be necessary, because there are gentler, more effective, alternative pain relief with few or no side effects.

Surgeons can do amazing things. My husband, Karl, would not be alive today without the skilled hands and expertise of Dr. Denton Cooley, who, in 1986, patched a hole in his aorta and installed a new heart valve. But surgery may not always be the best choice.

TENS and PEMF for pain management

TENS is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for pain management. PEMF is pulsed electromagnetic field. TENS units use electric currents while PEMF devices use pulsed electromagnetic fields. TENS manages pain by distraction. PEMF is designed for cellular repair and deeper healing. To learn the pros and cons of each, read more

Frequency Specific Microcurrent therapy for pain management
Frequency specific microcurrent "is a highly effective way to treat pain that doesn't require a trip to the doctor, taking pain medications, or even taking supplements," says Frank Shallenberger, M.D. See our page on FSM to see how this gentle treatment can help with a wide variety of pain issues.

Prolozone and PRP for pain relief

A combination of prolozone and platelet rich plasma treatment can eliminate most joint and muscle pain, says Frank Shallenberger, M.D. in his newsletter, Second Opinion, 6/17.

Says Shallenberger: "If you have any condition that hurts or won't heal, before you resort to surgery or a lifetime of pain drugs, please find a doctor trained in PRP or Prolozone. Or better yet, find one who knows how to combine them. I'm talking about any part of your body that hurts for any reason. This includes any injury, chronic neck and back pain, rotator cufff damage, degenerative and arthritic hips and knees, degenerated or herniated discs, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ syndrome, sciatica, heel spurs, neuromas, tennis elbow, post-surgery pain, non-union fractures and painful scars.

"If it hurts, no matter how serious the condition, there is a 75-80% chance that PRP and Prolozone will take care of the problem.  You can find doctors trained in Prolozone at the American Academy of Ozonotherapy, website www.aaot.cu. Many of these doctors know how to combine Prolozone with PRP. You can find doctors trained in PRP by searching the Internet."

Earthing for alternative pain relief

A wide variety of pain is caused by inflammation. Our technology-driven world constantly bombards us with inflammation-causing electrical energy from cell phones, WiFi, etc. Get rid of the inflammation to get rid of the pain.

One of the best methods of alternative pain relief is called earthing. Earthing (also called grounding) is simply walking barefoot on the beach (best), grass, damp ground, dry soil, brich, rock or concrete, in order of effectiveness.

High-density urban areas sometimes have stray electrical charges that negate the benefits of earthing, so get to the beach, the bank of a river, a park or other open area to get the most benefit. Do 30 minutes of more per day.

Earthing uses the abundance of negative charge, or electrons, in the surface of the earth to neutralize the positive charge, or protons, that cause inflammation.

A study done using infrared imaging showed a significant decrease in inflammation after just 30 minutes of earthing. In addition to alternative pain relief, earthing improves sleep, wound healing and chronic fatigue. Inflammation is also a factor in arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer and more, so earthing may help with those conditions.

Decades ago, our leather-soled shoes kept us grounded, but modern shoes with synthetic soles prevent earthing. Some companies make shoes designed for earthing. You can find them at earthrunners.com, grounding.com and theearthingstore.com. Or, you can wear leather-soled shoes, if you can find them.

Alternative pain relief: astaxanthin

Astaxanthin works to decrease overactive inflammatory compounds in the body that produce pain. A study of 146 people between 20 and 87 years old, who had muscle and joint soreness reported that 88 percent of those who took astaxanthin felt better. In another survey of those with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or back pain, more than 80 percent showed improvement after taking astaxanthin.

A study of wrist pain from workplace overuse found that 12 mg of astaxanthin reduced daytime pain by 41 percent.

Since it's fat soluble, astaxanthin works better if you take it with a meal containing fat. Note that it takes time to work as an alternative pain relief remedy. Wait at least eight weeks to see if it helps you, especially for muscle, joint and tendon pain.

Alternative pain relief: Cetyl myristoleate

After using cetyl myristoleate (CMO), a patient at Whitaker Wellness Clinic in Newport Beach, California "lost 60-70 percent of the severe back and muscle pain I had for 42 years." He gave it to friends "...and their pain went away too." He uses a product called CetylPure by Natrol, which contains 220 mg of CMO. (Health & Healing newsletter, 10/16)

I also use a CMO product called Celadrin, by Swanson, to keep my knee pain completely at bay. If I stop taking it, the pain comes back.

Considering the way it's working for us, it could be one of the natural ways to relieve joint pain.

Here are some studies on CMO (also known as Omega 5), for a variety of kinds of pain.

Never give up on pain relief

I have had lots of different kinds of pain. Because I had access to cutting edge information, and because I was persistent and wouldn't give up, I managed to get rid of my pain. I had the motto, "I’ll try anything," and I did, seeing one doctor after another, using one thing after another, sometimes trying as many as a dozen approaches or products until I found one that worked. Believe me, it’s worth being persistent and optimistic to get rid of your pain. Never give up! I found a way to fix it, and you can, too.

Never believe someone when they say, "Learn to live with it," as one famous sports medicine specialist said to me about my heel pain. (I finally fixed that one with a supplement.) Never give up. Too many miracles have happened. Never, never, never give up.

"Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."  Matthew 11:28.

A number of studies have linked prayer to healing, and although the results have been inconclusive, what could it hurt to talk to the omnipotent creator of the universe? A prayer for healing might go something like this:

"Dear Lord, please hear me now as I pray for your help with (name your problem). I pray you’ll cleanse my body and heal me completely. In Jesus’ name I pray; Amen."
